Decomposing low-rank symmetric tensors

Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory

Speaker: Joe Kileel, UT Austin
Location: Zoom 977 8744 1758
Start time: Wed, Jan 19 2022, 11:00AM

In this talk, I will discuss different low-rank decompositions of symmetric tensors (a.k.a. higher-order symmetric matrices).I will highlight how certain results in algebraic geometry imply uniqueness guarantees for tensor decompositions, and also lead to fast and numerically stable algorithms for calculating the decompositions.I will present applications to Gaussian mixture models in data science, and rigid motion segmentation in computer vision. This talk is based on joint works with João M. Pereira, Tammy Kolda, Ruhui Jin, Yifan Zhang and Rachel Ward.
