Inversion of Non-uniform Difference Operators

We introduce and solve the problem of inverting a non-uniform
difference operator, or equivalently of solving the (linear)
difference equation
$$ \Delta_\Phi\big[v\big](t) := v\big(\Phi(t)\big) - v(t) = w(t),$$
with uniform bounds on the solution operator; here $\Phi$ is a given
invertible map of the circle. This is the simplest form of an
equation that arises in our long-term project of proving the existence
of time- and space-periodic solutions of the compressible Euler
equations of fluid dynamics. Obtaining bounds on the solution
operator with a finite loss of derivatives is an essential step in
applying the Nash-Moser method to this larger problem. We solve
the problem in stages, depending on the geometric structure of the
shift map $\Phi$. After identifying a solvability condition, we are able
to completely characterize the solution operator and obtain bounds.
We end with a discussion of the ways we expect to apply these
techniques in our Nash-Moser iteration.
