In this talk I'll review some of the work over the last twenty years done both with my co-authors and others on the classical problem of isometric embedding of a Riemannian manifold into Euclidean space. Particular attention will be paid the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci system whose resolution is both a necessary and sufficient condition for the sufficiently regular embeddings. Analogies with fluid systems will be given as well as applications to initial value problems.
