This will be an informal talk for people who are curious about mathematical software, from the viewpoint of my current role in the SageMath project. I started to use Python and SageMath in 2013, became a contributor in 2016, and have been the leading developer since 2020.
SageMath is free and open source software (FOSS), in contrast to systems like MATLAB and Mathematica.
To make meaningful contributions to mathematical software, one does not have to be a top programmer. Mathematical writing, for example extending documentation, writing expositions, and developing examples are very welcome and often overlooked ways to contribute.
