Gas flow in several dimensions is notoriously challenging to analyze in any generality. Self-similar flows provide a subclass of solutions that can be studied in detail. They are relevant in applications (bomb-making, inertial confinement fusion), and have recently provided a key ingredient in the work by Merle-Raphael-Rodnianski-Szeftel on singularity formation in compressible Navier-Stokes flows.
We will describe the setup for three uses of self-similarity in Euler flow: Guderley's original converging shock solution, continuous collapse of focusing waves, and the motion of fluid-vacuum interfaces.
