I’ll present a series of models from our lab group that illustrate the cross-talk between basic and applied science with kelp forest systems. The central basic science question is with regards to the structuring of ecological communities: whether, and under which mechanisms, might kelp forests and urchin barrens occur as alternative stable states. The applications range from fisheries recovery planning to kelp forest restoration. Models can indicate the relative potential for different mechanisms to drive alternative stable states, and then applications of models with the most relevant mechanisms can inform an array of management decisions. In addition, exploration of these applications to management can lead to surprising insights on the role of different mechanisms and therefore basic science insight.
