Research in mathematics is a risky pursuit with an uncertain outcome. I will illustrate this with stories about three of my research projects from recent years: one failed, one succeeded, and one is currently ongoing (and possibly could benefit from the creativity and energy of additional people). The talk will focus on the process of research more than on mathematical details: how a research project is conceived and what sort of mindset successful researchers have. Some mathematical details will also be discussed.
