Physics Colloquium: A magic show

Featured Campus Seminars

Speaker: Tadashi Tokieda, Stanford University
Location: 55 Roessler
Start time: Mon, Apr 14 2025, 4:10PM

Because this is a magic show, there can't be an abstract, but I'll use paper, scissors, tape, and a little imagination to conjure up phenomena that are (pleasantly) surprising to seasoned scientists. They are all reproducible by you later, in front of family and friends. I may explain the mathematics on which these phenomena project.

Bio: Tadashi Tokieda is a professor of mathematics at Stanford. He grew up as a painter in Japan, became a classical philologist (not to be confused with philosopher) in France, before switching careers to pure mathematics in which he earned a PhD from Princeton. He has since worked as an applied mathematician in many countries. He is also active in outreach, especially via the youtube channel Numberphile and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, and gave public lectures at 2 International Congresses of Mathematicians.

Reception at 3:30pm in the Physics Atrium.
