We propose a kinematic wave theory for modeling dynamics of diverging traffic. In this theory, traffic dynamics of vehicles to different directions are decoupled in a short time interval. Each of the decoupled systems is a nonlinear resonant system and can be analytically solved by instantaneous kinematic waves. Further, a new definition of traffic demand is introduced so that diverging flows can be easily computed with the supply-demand method. Simulation results of this model for two scenarios of diverging traffic are also presented and discussed.
