Description
The theory of plane curves, which are immersions of the circle into the plane, can be viewed in some ways as a lower dimensional analogue of knot theory. The study of these curves attracted renewed attention after Arnold introduced his three basic invariants in the early 1990’s. In my talk I will introduce the different notions of equivalence for plane curves, introduce Arnold’s three basic invariants, and discuss how to calculate these invariants.
