The ideal boundary of a symmetric space of nonpositive curvature has a natural topology that's homeomorphic to a sphere. However, there is a finer topology arising from a certain metric that retains more of the geometry of the symmetric space itself. With this metric, the ideal boundary is given the structure of a spherical building.
