The Diophantine approximation problem asks how well an irrational number can be approximated by rationals. Under certain conditions, such an approximation can be encoded in geodesics in the hyperbolic plane. In this talk, we will discuss the connection between hyperbolic lines and Diophantine approximations, then discuss a generalization (by example) of the problem which applies to Fuchsian groups.
