Description
The plactic monoid is a wonderful structure in combinatorics that has
immediate application to symmetric functions and representation theory
(eg, Littlewood-Richardson rule), as well as group theory, physics and
geometry. I'll define it and talk a little about some applications.
This talk is intended to be accessible.
