An Introduction to Tropical Geometry with Applications

Description
Tropical Geometry is geometry over the min-plus semiring. Its
objects are polyhedral cell complexes which behave like complex algebraic
varieties. Tropical Geometry is a relatively new area with exciting and
surprising connections to various areas of mathematics. Many authors are
currently exploring a wide range of applications in both pure and applied
mathematics, including computational biology. In this talk we introduce
the subject from its roots, describe how to draw certain tropical curves,
and briefly describe an application to computational biology: how tropical
Grassmanians of lines coincide with the space of phylogenetic trees.
