1D maps and the Li-Yorke theorem

I will give a brief introduction to 1D maps, periodic orbits and stability, and then proceed to the Li-Yorke theorem. The theorem concerns periodic orbits of 1D maps. A direct consequence of it is the following (somewhat surprising) statement: If a continuous function from R to R has a point of period 3, then it has points of all periods. No background will be assumed.
