Let V be a rational representation of GL(n,C). Then V admits a basis, the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis, parametrized by the lattice points in a convex polytope. All basis elements are weight vectors and the weight depends linearly on the corresponding lattice point. I will explain how this (and generalizations of this) can be used to calculate weight multiplicities of Demazure modules and Clebsch-Gordan coefficients.
