In algebraic statistics, toric ideals are used for describing Markov processess. For some toric ideals associated to rhombus tiliings, alternating sign matrices, and related objects, the algebraic properties of these toric ideals are surprisingly nice. I don't know if these are curious coincidences or signs of something deep, but Dan Romik suggested that I would share my thoughts on it. I will not assume any previous exposure to algebraic statistics.
