Rock-paper-scissors, the game of childhood fame, is observed in a diversity of natural systems ranging from competing strains of E.coli to competing male morphs of side-blotched lizards. A fundamental question about these natural systems is how does spatial and temporal variation in environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, precipitation, resource availability) influence coexistence of these competing strategies? To address this question, I will introduce some recent theorems about coexistence for interacting populations in temporally or spatially heterogeneous environments and illustrate their application to rock-paper-scissor communities.
