Nuero-scientists in UC Davis Center for Neuroscience are interested in knowing the morphological effect of FXS/FXTAS, two common neuro-degenerative diseases, on the growth and aging of mouse brains. Land-marking shape modeling are used on MRI images of mouse brains to help answering this question. In this talk, I will talk about the mathematics behind the land-marking approach of shape modeling, where the shape space is identified with a Riemannian manifold S^{km-m-1}/SO(m), where m is the dimension of the interested shape, and k is the number of landmarks used to model the shape. The egg shape of different types of bird is used throughout the talk as examples to make the discussion light and concrete.
