I will introduce the notion of a Heegaard splitting for a compact 3-manifold with boundary, and following the result of Casson and Gordon, will explain their proof that a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting for a 3-manifold M is either reducible or M is contains an incompressible surface of positive genus.
