Hyperbolic 3-dimensional manifolds are a large and interesting subclass of the set of all 3-manifolds. Hyperbolic volume is an excellent invariant of 3-manifolds. It is an interesting problem to try to classify hyperbolic 3-manifolds of small volume. For example, our spacelike universe might have the topology of a hyperbolic 3-manifold, and if we will be able to detect its structure, it will probably need to be of relatively small volume. We will discuss the relation of volume to the topology of 3-manifolds.
