Thin position for 3-manifolds

This talk will define thin position for 3-manifolds, and examine its relation to Heegaard genus and essential surfaces in the manifold. In particular, this leads to a very nice proof of a result of Casson-Gordon which was presented in a talk last quarter. If time allows, we may also discuss thin position for knots, and some newer ideas of "axiomatic thin position".
