Lie groups make an appearance in many fields of pure and applied mathematics. For this reason it is useful for any mathematician to have some idea of what they are. In this talk I will give an elementary introduction to Lie groups, covering their basic properties, examples, and their connection to Lie algebras. The talk is aimed at those who have never encountered Lie groups before, but are considering taking the course on them which is being offered winter quarter.
