We will begin with a brief introduction to knots and Heegaard splittings for 3-manifolds. I will define and provide examples of Dehn surgery in the 3-sphere and end with the Lickorish-Wallace Theorem (a.k.a. the Fundamental Theorem of 3-manifolds).
