Intro Talk - Trisections, handle decompositions, and Dehn surgery
Student-Run Geometry/Topology SeminarSpeaker: | Alex Zupan, University of Nebraska |
Location: | 3106 MSB |
Start time: | Tue, May 10 2016, 11:00AM |
A trisection of a smooth 4-manifold X is a decomposition of X into three simple pieces. Trisections were introduced by Gay and Kirby in 2012 as an analogue to Heegaard splittings, and they have great potential to provide new insights into 4-manifold topology. We give a gentle introduction to trisections and discuss the relationship between trisections and handle decompositions as well as their connections to Dehn surgery on links in 3-manifolds.
