The Kirby Calculus Strikes Back!
Student-Run Geometry/Topology SeminarSpeaker: | Kevin Lamb, UC Davis |
Location: | 2112 MSB |
Start time: | Thu, Mar 2 2017, 10:00AM |
This is a continuation of a previous talk. We briefly recall the construction of handlebodies from surgery on framed links in S^3 and then move on to prove a theorem of Rob Kirby. That is, if two framed links in S^3 are related through his 2-move Calculus, then the boundaries of the 4-manifolds that these framed links describe are diffeomorphic. The details of this proof (which were EXTREMELY limited previously) will now be given in their entirety and will include an introduction to Cerf theory.
