A central goal of cognitive neuroscience is to elucidate the neural mechanisms that underlie decision making. A broad range of decision processes involve gradual accumulation of evidence over time, but the neural circuits that mediate these computations remain unclear. I will describe recent work that relates measurements of neural activity in rats to computational models of their decision processes for simple choice tasks involving the accumulation of sensory evidence over time. I will also describe how these computational models aid the interpretation of experiments involving artificial perturbation of neural activity during decision making.
