The notions of limit and colimit are indispensable constructions in myriad categories of interest to mathematicians. If one works in a category with a notion of homotopy and only cares about objects up to homotopy, one may pass to the corresponding homotopy category by formally inverting these homotopies. However, the usual limit and colimit do not behave well in the homotopy category and instead one works with homotopy limits and colimits. In this talk we introduce these ideas and give some basic examples.
