Gabai's recent work on the "4D Lightbulb Theorem" introduced ingenious techniques to study the relationship between homotopy, topological isotopy, and smooth isotopy of surfaces in 4-manifolds. We will begin by discussing some background and motivation for this theorem, such as how to produce topologically but not smoothly isotopic spheres in simply-connected 4-manifolds, before giving an idea of its proof.
