The moduli space of complex cubic threefolds admits various compactifications, by viewing it as a GIT quotient, as a ball quotient, or via the intermediate Jacobians. We compute and compare the (intersection) cohomology of these various compactifications. Based on joint work with S. Casalaina-Martin, K. Hulek, and R. Laza.
