Kontsevich [in "Operads and Motives in Deformation Quantization"] conjectured that several deformation-theoretic structures can be deduced from a motivic interpretation of certain structures related to topological conformal field theory (including chains on the operad of little disks). I will explain how much this program can be implemented using etale cohomology and other motives attached to certain new log algebraic varieties, namely moduli space of "framed logarithmic curves", and deduce some old and new results about formality, deformations, and periods.
