Mathematical Modelling of Flow-Mediated Intravascular and Extravascular Blood Clotting

Blood clotting is the process of blocking a vascular injury with a platelet aggregate or thrombus to prevent the loss of blood. The system involves the physics of flow-mediated transport in various geometries and force-dependent mechanics of cell function, as well as the biochemistry of enzymatic and inhibitory chemical reaction networks. The diversity and complexity of these processes make it extremely difficult to intuit the system's response without quantitative methods. In this talk, we will explore the analysis of a preexisting mathematical model of intravascular blood clotting which led to experimental design and key changes in our understanding of the system. Additionally, we will examine the development of a novel model of extravascular clot formation informed by higher-order computational and experimental models. Both research efforts employ key steps in the iterative process of mathematical modeling.
