Prandtl's boundary layer theory is an asymptotic theory used to describe the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations in domains with boundaries. This theory was introduced in 1904, and is widely regarded as a major breakthrough in fluid dynamics which has since had monumental impacts in many applied fields (for instance, aerodynamics). Nevertheless, the rigorous mathematical underpinnings (for instance, stability and convergence results) behind this asymptotic theory remain elusive. After introducing the general ideas and objects of study, I will describe some recent results of mine in this direction.
