The fundamental theorem of surfaces ensures that surfaces in R^3 are determined by the first and second fundamental forms. In this talk, I construct an elementary generalization of this theorem for arbitrary hypersurface embeddings using so-called "higher fundamental forms." Using this, I will give (somewhat) explicit characterizations of hypersurface embeddings realizeable as warped products in terms of these fundamental forms.
