Clutch play off the bench and poise during the final minutes of two close road games lifted the UC Davis men's basketball team past California Collegiate Athletic Association foes San Francisco State University 62-57 Saturday night and Sonoma State University 62-55 Friday.

With the two victories, the Aggies improved their record to 16-3 overall, and 12-2 in conference. SFSU fell to 5-14, 2-12 while SSU rebounded after Friday's loss to defeat Cal State Chico and finished this weekend with a 15-3, 11-3 mark.

Davis trailed for most of Friday's game against the Cossacks and found themselves down 43-34 with less that nine minutes remaining. In addition to the nine-point deficit, UCD head coach Brian Fogel was forced to sit his All-American point guard Dante Ross for much of the second half due to foul trouble, a combination that appeared lethal for the Aggies.

But with their backs against the wall, the Aggies looked to what is becoming their perennial X-factor, the bench, to get them out of Rohnert Park alive.

And the bench responded - reeling off nine unanswered points in five minutes, with the clincher coming when, with four seconds on the shot clock, backup point guard Tyler Boyd got trapped in the corner and was able to sink a three-pointer that put his team up for good and silenced SSU's record crowd.

"I heard the band counting 'four, three, two, one,' and I saw that J.C. (Timmons) was stuck so I knew that I had to shoot it," Boyd said. "It was automatic."

While the play wasn't designed for Boyd, Fogel said he was happy with its impromptu finish.

"He can shoot it a little bit, that was not the play though," he said. "I'm really proud of the way we played tonight. We hung around, and we hung around and we competed."

In addition to Boyd's three-pointer, wing Scott Darmstadt's four rebounds and two three-pointers in the final 10 minutes were crucial to insuring his team's success.

"I was a little frustrated in the first half," Darmstadt said. "But by the end of the game I was able to get my feet set and hit my shots. It was like butter, it felt nice. In the last 10 minutes we played like savages."

Scoring leaders for SSU were forward Walter Jefferson, who had 17, center Travis Duncan and guard Jason Gunnerson, who had 10 each. Duncan also led the Cossacks in rebounding with 10.

The Aggies were led in scoring by post Jason Cox, who had 16, and Ross who had 11. Darmstadt came off the bench to pull down 10 rebounds and score six points. All of Darmstadt's points, and most of his rebounds, came in the second half.

"He provides a spark off the bench," said Fogel of Darmstadt. "He is the best sixth man for the Aggies, and that is what counts. If he is open, and has his feet set, then he is an excellent shooter."

With Friday's victory, the Aggies moved into sole possession of first place in the CCAA. And with the win Saturday, and the majority of their remaining conference schedule at home, the Aggies find themselves comfortably in command.

However, against the Gators, UCD's newly won first place looked to be in jeopardy. SFSU was held scoreless for the first five minutes, but turned it around behind the inspired play of forward Reggie Watts, who scored 23 points on the night.

But as with Friday's game, experience and poise down the stretch was a deciding factor, and the Aggies were able to clamp it down in the final minute.

"We played really good," SFSU head coach Charlie Thomas said. "We played with a lot of heart and a lot of determination and kept it close, which is what we wanted to do. But we made too many mistakes down the stretch."

UCD was led in scoring, again, by Cox, who had 25.

This weekend, the Aggies host Cal State Los Angeles on Friday, a team they beat 55-47 in L.A. earlier this season, and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night. UCD beat CSDH 55-49 Dec. 12. Both games begin at 8.
