Stanford's 'We're No. 1' claim holds water now

Bee Sports Staff
(Published Sept. 17, 1998)

A whole new level of expectation officially has begun to descend on Stanford's basketball team. Six months after completing a 30-5 season and Final Four appearance, the Cardinal was tabbed this week as the nation's preseason No. 1 team by Athlon Sports College Basketball magazine.

Stanford, returning all five starters from the 1997-98 squad, is picked by Athlon to defeat Connecticut in the national championship game. As it happens, the Cardinal plays host to the Huskies at Maples Pavilion on Feb. 6.

In addition, Athlon rated Stanford's backcourt of Arthur Lee and Kris Weems as the best in the nation, and the Cardinal front line of Tim Young, Mark Madsen and Peter Sauer as tops in the nation.

Stanford opens practice with Cardinal Chaos -- the school's version of Midnight Madness -- on Oct. 16. The Cardinal opens the season against UC Davis, the defending Division II national champion, Nov. 14 at Maples.
