Williams is West's top coach

(Published March 18, 1998)

Bob Williams, enjoying his most successful season as UC Davis' basketball coach since coming to the school in 1990, was named West Region Coach of the Year on Tuesday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

While he said the honor was not surprising, Williams credited the people around him.

"It's a tribute to the caliber of players and to the program at UC Davis," he said. "It's more of an honor for them than it is for me."

Going into today's NCAA Division II semifinals, Williams is 155-76 at UC Davis. In the program's 88-year history, only six teams have won 20 or more games in a season; Williams has coached five of them.
