      How the West got weird

Oftentimes people turn to sports to make sense of the world and take a hiatus from their crazy, mixed-up lives. Indeed, athletics is a nice escape from the confusing world of school or work and a retreat into a competitive environment where the better team or athlete gets their just desserts.

However, if you are a fan of UC Davis men's basketball, that is not the case.

Despite finding themselves ranked third in the nation, and 14 places ahead of Central Washington University, the Aggies are placed second behind CWU in the latest West Region poll. That may not matter much now, but in March - when it is time to determine who will host the West Regionals - No. 1 out West will be huge.

"Each weekend gets bigger," UCD head coach Brian Fogel said. "It's imperative that we go down and play well (tonight) and Saturday. We are trying to establish momentum into March.

"We have four games left and we need to handle those games," he added. "We need to take it one game at a time."

This weekend, the Aggies, 19-4 overall and 15-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, embark on their final road trip of the CCAA season to face Cal State Stanislaus tonight and Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday.

The Aggies defeated the Warriors 74-55 Jan. 8 in Recreation Hall. Davis had three players score in double figures that evening, as guard Dante Ross led the team with 16, wing J.C. Timmons added 12 and post Jordan Moss hit for 10. The Ags' defense held Stanislaus to a paltry 35 percent shooting, including just 25 percent in the first half.

However, last time the Aggies faced the Warriors, Stanislaus was without the services of 6-foot-6-inch wing Malik Harris who, in just nine games, is averaging 17 points and nine rebounds a game. Harris is already third on the team in shots attempted.

"They are a very good home team," said Fogel of Stanislaus. "In this league, road wins are hard to come by."

The last time the Ags faced Bakersfield, it was a much different story. Davis was stunned in the first half when the Roadrunners jumped out to 23-7 seven minutes before halftime. UCD ended up losing 73-61 and saw CSUB guard Lovell Brown hit seven three-pointers.

"I anticipate them zoning us for 40 minutes," Fogel said. "It will be their last home game of the season and it will probably be senior night. They will be up for the game.

"They feel that if they can win the rest of their games, that they have an outside chance of making the playoffs," he added.

Game time tonight is at 8 or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game, whichever is later. Saturday, against Bakersfield, tipoff is at 7 p.m.
