General course information

Textbook

The textbook for the course is Thomas' Calculus (13th edition).
We will use the electronic version of the textbook bundled with MyMathLab (see below).

Final exam

The final exam will be in Hart 1130 (our usual classroom) on Wednesday, December 7, 6-8 pm. It will cover everything we've studied in this class: sections 4.8, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Practice problems: problems .

There will be a review session on Tuesday, December 6, 12-1pm in Math 2112. It will be in question and answer format, so please prepare your questions in advance. Letter grade cutoffs are computed based on the weighted average (combining midterms, final, paper and MyMathLab homeworks) and the following table:

Weighted average <50 50-60 60-65 65-70 70-80 80-85 85-90 90-105 >105
Letter grade F C C+ B- B B+ A- A A+

Midterm 2

The second midterm will be in class on Monday, November 14. It will cover sections 6, 7.1 and 7.2 of the textbook on applications of integrals: volume, curve length, surface area, work, pressure, center of mass, separable differential equations.

Practice problems: problems

Midterm 1

The first midterm will be in class on Friday, October 14. It will cover sections 4.8, 5 and 6.1 of the textbook (integrals, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, substitutions, areas and volumes).

Practice problems: problems

Final grade and exams

There will be two midterms on Friday, October 14 and on Monday, November 14.
The Final will be on Wednesday, December 7, 6-8 pm.
The final grade is based on your grades for the homework, midterms and the final:

Homework Midterm I Midterm II Final Exam
20% 20% 20% 40%

Homework

The homework consists of two parts: paper homework and MyMathLab. Paper homework should be handed in before the start of Wednesday lecture. It must be legible, and written in connected sentences that explains what you are doing. Just the answer (whether correct or not) is not enough. ease put your name on every page and staple the pages together. Homework should be handed in on time, late homework will not be graded.

Though it is fine to discuss the HW problems with others, you must always write up the solutions in your own words. Copying will be penalized. Of course, in the exams you must work on your own: no calculators, textbooks etc will be allowed.

MyMathLab homework is done online and is graded automatically. The course ID is gorskiy57291 . The instructions for the course registration can be found here.
